For most patients, the experience is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling - and the relief afterward makes it well worth it.
WHEN IS A ROOT CANAL NEEDED?
A root canal becomes necessary when the soft tissue inside your tooth - called the pulp - becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen as a result of deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or repeated dental procedures on the same tooth. Left untreated, an infected tooth can lead to an abscess, spreading infection, and eventually tooth loss.
Common signs you may need a root canal include:

Severe or persistent tooth pain

Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is removed

Swelling or tenderness in the surrounding gums

Darkening of the tooth

A persistent pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE INVOLVE?
During a root canal, we remove the infected pulp from inside the tooth, clean and shape the root canals, and seal the tooth to prevent reinfection. In most cases, a crown is placed afterward to protect and strengthen the tooth for the long term. The procedure is typically completed in one to two appointments.
With local anesthesia, most patients are comfortable throughout. Many leave feeling significantly better than when they walked in.
